Which would be a better back story for this?

I say option 1. Maybe like a huge asteroid hits the moon and the moon crashes into Earth. It kills half of the world, the other half tries to rebuild it all but all fails. And the crash causes the Earth to get knocked out of orbit or something. Hope I help.
